Cavan:
Blessed with some beautiful lake scenery, the county of Cavan has pretty much always been a “watery” place renowned for it's lake fishing and has over 350 lakes.
The town of Cavan is pretty small and pleasant with a relatively small population. The town was at one point an important stronghold of the O'Reilly's and their castle: Clough Oughter stands on an island in Lough Oughter which is approx 3 miles outside of Cavan. The Castle is a well preserved 13th century circular tower and is well worth a visit and photo opportunity.

Another place of interest in Cavan is the modern Roman Catholic Cathedral which is worth a visit just to see the fine sculptures themselves, another place you might consider visiting is Cavan crystal, the second oldest lead crystal factory in Ireland and offers guided tours.

Places of interest in or around Cavan:

Butlersbridge: Located approx 5 miles N of Cavan on the N3 road.
Well renowned for it's coarse fishing and boats can sometimes be hired from here.
We would recommend approx: >> 1 - 2 hours stay.

Bawnboy: Located approx 22 miles NW of Cavan on the N87 road.
This tiny hamlet town is popular with walkers as it acts as a gateway to some beautiful scenic mountains and glens in the area. You can take the Glen Gap walk and climb approx 1148ft to Glen Gap which lies between the peaks of Cullcagh and Benbragh, or go a little further west and at Glengevlin you can see some stunning panoramic views of neighbouring places!
We would recommend approx: >> Full day stay.

Kingscourt: Located approx 22 miles SE of Cavan on the R165 road.
This small town is close to borders with both Co.Meath and Co.Louth, the town is noted for it's stained glass windows in the Catholic church designed by Dublin artist Evie Hone. A couple of miles north of the town is the entrance to: Dun a Rí Forest Park which is a lovely location to have a family picnic by the Cabra river, then take the planned walks and nature trails and maybe catch a sight of the wild Deer amoung the trees!
The park is part of the former Cabra demense which belogned to the lord of Cormey castle, the same castle where both Oliver Cromwell and James II were entertained. The castle is now a luxury hotel.
We would recommend approx: >> Half day stay.
