Killarney Info: Famed for the Killarney lakes and mountains the town of Killarney is one of the major towns in Co.Kerry. The town relies heavily on tourism and if you plan on visiting Killarney you will certainly see why!
The town of Killarney is certainly a must visit if you plan on touring Ireland, the surrounding's are stunning with magnificient views of loughs and mountains that open up in almost every direction with much of the spectacular scenery lying within the boundaries of the Killarney National Park. Many tourists that visit here like to take a popular excursion from the town on a day trip through the park on a pony trap driven by a driver guide who will most likely regale you with inventive history along with tales of leprechauns and myths and legends to boot, however please advise that their charges can often be somewhat extrodinary so always try to negotiate a price before you set off.
As you tour around Killarney you may noitce that their is other excursions such as boat trips around the three lakes of Lough Leane, the Upper lake and also Muckross lake all of which are framed by the Macgillycuddy's Reeks. The town of Killarney is also a great and natural starting point to discover the famous Ring Of Kerry which is a 110 mile circular drive around the Iveragh Peninsual that takes in some of the best scenery in Ireland.
However in case driving isn't your thing you can still see and discover this beautiful county by taking the Kerry Way tour which is the walker's alternative to the driving version so to speak. The Kerry Way is a 133 mile hiking trail that goes around the neck of the Peninsula which takes in the spectacular scenery near both Windy Gap and Torc Mountain.
Unfortunatly the town of Killarney isn't really much of a tourist interest itself as it does lack much of an architectural interest although Knockreer Estate and Ross Castle are worth visiting along with Innisfallen Island are a definate must.
There are of course locations outside of Killarney to visit and we have included those of interest in the Kerry review located on the main Kerry location page found
here.
For our recommendations we would highly recommend that you spend a few days in and around Killarney and Kerry and renting a car is highly recommended especially in high season as this location is awash with many tourists and rental cars do become booked extremely quickly during those times.
Like most locations throughout Ireland camera film is often needed, however in and around the county of Kerry you might just need a bit more, so always try to remember to have enough to last each day of exploring!
