Galway information:
Galway Airport Directions: We have provided here a driving route from Galway airport to Galway city: From Galway airport take the R339 / N6 road to Galway city, the N18 northbound / N17 leads towards Co.Mayo and the NW of Ireland, the N18 southbound takes you towards Ennis and Co.Clare.
Car hire popularity: Car rental in Galway is popular and vehicles do become booked up very quickly due to the airport location. Car hire in the Galway area is very popular during peak times and holiday periods and we would highly recommend booking your rental well in advance.
Galway location: Like we have said in the write-up about Galway on this page there is a lot to see in the Galway and Co.Galway area so it would be a good idea to plan a few days touring around the Galway area and having quite a bit of photo film handy.
Nearest airport(s): If you plan on visiting Galway or the area of Co.Galway then the nearest airport to choose would be:

Galway airport: >> Located approx 6 miles off the R339 road. See above for directions to Galway and other locations within Ireland.

This location: >> Portumna, Co. Galway.

N = North | S = South | E = East | W = West.

Nearest car rental locations to Portumna are:
Portumna | Galway | Galway Airport.

Portumna: Located approx 40 miles SE of Galway on the N65 road.
The town of Portumna is traditionally a market town which pretty much stands on the shore of Lough Derg. The town of Portumna is a well known angling location and it has it's own marina which is quite busy serving both the Shannon and the Lough.
There are cruises available (check locally for availability) which go along the Lough, or you may be able to take a cruise along to Co.Tipperary, however usually these are available during summer only.
In the town and surrounding areas of Portumna there are a few sights to see, Sights such as 'Portumna Forest Park' which is a wildlife sanctuary located on approx 1,000 acre and borders Lough Derg. There is also 'Portumna Castle' and also the ruins of a 'Dominician Priory' , so you could easily spend a day here and have something to see or do. For ourselves we would recommend a visit here, if you do plan on taking our tour of Galway and County then why not take in the few extra locations we have added and see it all and we hope that you will enjoy and appreciate the County of Galway just as much as we did.
We would recommend approx: >> Full day stay.
